FROM KÖLN HAUPTBAHNHOF TO THE HOTEL FLANDRISCHER HOF

From the airport (Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf) take the direct train to the Cologne main train station ("Köln Hauptbahnhof"). At the train station go downstairs to the subway ("U-Bahn") located under the main entrance hall, at the side of the cathedral. At the subway station you can buy a short trip "Kurzstrecke" ticket (EUR 1.90) at the ticket window or from the vending machines (accepting only coins). Take a subway # 16 or 18 (direction to "Neumarkt") and get off at "Neumarkt" (2 stops). Then walk up the stairs to the tram station (take # 1, direction to "Weiden" or # 7, direction to "Frechen"). Get off at the next stop called "Rudolfplatz". Flandrischer Hof is within 1 minute walking distance: cross Rudolfplatz to the opposite corner, continue straight and take the next street to the right (Flandrische Str.).

FROM HOTEL FLANDRISCHER HOF TO THE THEORETICAL PHYSICS INSTITUTE (new building)

Three options (roughly 20 min each):

1. From "Rudolfplatz" take U-bahn # 12 or 15 to "Zülpicher Platz" (next stop). On "Zülpicher Platz" go to the tram stop with the same name just around the corner (near the "REWE City" shop). Take # 9 (direction "Sülz") to "Universität" (second stop). At "Universität" go to the back of the tram and cross the lines - the new building of the Institute is right in front of you.

2. Go to Rudolfplatz, cross to the opposite corner. At the bus stop take the bus # 136 (direction "Hohenlind") or 146 (direction "Deckstein") to "Wiso-Fakultät" (3rd stop). At lights near the bus stop cross the road and follow the nice alley all the way to the end (5 min walk). Cross the tram lines and go 100 meters to the right to new building of the Institute.

On Monday morning, around 8:40-9:00, the Organisers will wait for you in the lobby of the Hotel and show the way to the Institute.

If you arrive to "Köln Hauptbahnhof" on Monday morning, at the train station go downstairs to the subway ("U-Bahn") located under the main entrance hall, at the side of the cathedral. At the subway station you can buy a short trip "Kurzstrecke" ticket (EUR 1.90) at the ticket window or from the vending machines (accepting only coins). Take a subway # 16 or 18 (direction to "Neumarkt") and get off at "Neumarkt" (2 stops). Then walk up the stairs to the tram station and take # 9, direction "Sülz". Get off at "Universität" (4th stop). Go to the back of the tram and cross the lines - the new building of the Institute is right in front of you.

There are plenty of nice cafes and restaurants in that area. The easiest possibility, as you exit the Hotel, go 100 meters to the left to Aachener Str., then make a right - and choose from one of several places on this short strip of the street (or on the other side).
The next intersection is Brüsseler Strasse. There you also have several nice places: Krua Thai on Brüsseler Str. 40-42, Candia (modern Greek) on Brüsseler Str. 70, Belgischer Hof (European) on Brüsseler Str. 54

For lunches during the Workshop the participants will receive lunch tickets of nominal value 10EUR, valid at the University Mensa. As you exit the Institute, the Mensa is red 2-story building across the tram lines about 100 meters to the right. You can see the menu on big screens in the foyer, select the food and go to the area where it is served (there are 4 areas with different foods: EG Nord, MG Nord, EG Süd, MG Süd). Leave the ticket at the register. There will be no special tables for us to seat together, rather we suggest to form groups of 4-8, this way it will be easier to find a place to seat.

As an alternative, we can recommend a couple of restaurants (Café Krümel, Da Siro) in 5 min walk from the Institute. Follow this Google map. (Exit the Institute, turn left and continue to the second intersection). You can also go in the opposite direction: exit the Institute, turn right and follow Zülpicher Str. - there are several places between the railway bridge and Zülpicher Platz.

Wednesday afternoon will be free time, where we decided to let you go and explore the city. Besides the Kölner Dom, and numerous Christmas markets on the squares around the old part of the town, we can recommend the following museums to your liking: Römisch-Germanisches Museum (archaeological museum), Museum Ludwig (modern art), Wallraf-Richartz Museum (fine art). Another landmark is Roman Praetorium (archaeological site with Roman ruins, remains of Jewish quarter and museum). Main shopping streets are Schildergasse and Hohe Str., all in walking distance from the Hotel.

Workshop Dinner will be on Thursday, December 17, at 19:30 at the Riphahn, which is in 10 min walk from the Flandrischer Hof. See this Google Map.
