Introduction aux groupes de difféotopie symplectiques

    Zagier's Polylogarithm Conjecture revisited

    21 avril 2023 - 16:00Salle de conférences IRMA

Instigated by work of Borel and Bloch, Zagier formulated his Polylogarithm Conjecture in the late eighties and proved it for weight 2. After a flurry of activity and advances at the time, notably by Goncharov who provided not only a proof for weight 3 but set out a vast program with a plethora of conjectural statements for attacking it, progress seemed to be stalled for a number of years. More recently, a solution to one of Goncharov's central conjectures in weight 4 has been given. Moreover, by adopting a new point of view, work by Goncharov and Rudenko gave a proof of the original conjecture in weight 4. In this impressionist talk I intend to give a rough idea of the developments from the early days on, avoiding most of the technical bits, and also hint at a number of recent results for higher weight, found in joint work with S.Charlton and D.Radchenko.

Problems in and around quantitative topology

    25 mai 2023 - 16:00Salle de conférences IRMA

I will give an overview of some recent advances and open problems in quantitative topology, studying not only whether there is a space modelling your favorite problem, but also how large and complex it is.

Periodic orbits of Reeb flows on odd dimensional spheres

    9 juin 2023 - 16:00Salle de conférences IRMA

An embedding of the 2n+1 dimensional sphere in the real 2n+2 dimensional
vector space gives rise to a 1-parameter autonomous flow on the sphere,
called the characteristic flow. If the image of the sphere by the embedding
bounds a starshaped domain, the corresponding characteristic flow is a
Reeb flow. A long standing and important conjecture, which is still very
much open, states that any of these Reeb flows on the 2n+1 dimensional
sphere has at least n+1 geometrically distinct periodic orbits. In this
talk I will present illustrative examples and some results motivated by
this conjecture in the convex case, including recent joint results with
Leonardo Macarini obtained using Long's index theory and Floer homology.

    Hyper-Kähler manifolds and Lagrangian fibrations

    22 septembre 2023 - 16:00Salle de conférences IRMA

A hyper-Kähler manifold is a complex Kähler manifold that is simply connected, compact, and has a unique holomorphic symplectic form, up to constants.
This important class of manifolds has been studied in the past in many contexts, from an arithmetic, algebraic, geometric point of view, and in applications to physics and dynamics.

The theory in dimension two, namely K3 surfaces, is well understood.
The aim of the seminar is to give an introduction to the theory of hyper-Kähler manifolds in higher dimension, from a point of view of their classification; in particular, about existence of Lagrangian fibrations.
We will present some results in dimension four, obtained in collaboration with Olivier Debarre, Daniel Huybrechts and Claire Voisin.

Random Arithmetic Lattices as Sphere Packings

    27 septembre 2023 - 10:30Salle de séminaires IRMA

In 1945, Siegel showed that the expected value of the lattice-sums of a function over all the lattices of unit covolume in an n-dimensional real vector space is equal to the integral of the function. In 2012, Venkatesh restricted the lattice-sum function to a collection of lattices that had a cyclic group of symmetries and proved a similar mean value theorem. Using this approach, new lower bounds on the most optimal sphere packing density in n dimensions were established for infinitely many n. In the talk, we will outline some analogues of Siegel’s mean value theorem over lattices. This approach has modestly improved some of the best known lattice packing bounds in many dimensions. We will speak of some variations and related ideas. (Joint work with V. Serban, M. Viazovska)

Reflection algebras and their (topo)logical incarnations

    10 novembre 2023 - 16:00Salle de conférences IRMA

We will discuss a class of algebras capturing essential features of the structure of independent sentences of logical theories such as Peano arithmetic or set theories. Similar structures emerge from scattered topological spaces, in particular, from topologies on ordinals. We will outline (in general terms) how reflection algebras are used to characterize the strength of logical theories. As an application, we will explain the unprovability in Peano arithmetic of a simple combinatorial statement, the so-called Worm principle.
